I got this keyboard to replace an older wireless Logitech that I was using that was having problems connecting with the wireless signal; decided to return to a traditional USB keyboard in the hopes of not having problems with delay.
This did solve that, but the negatives far outweigh that one positive.
1: The keys seem like they are compacted in width so I am ALWAYS hitting the wrong keys. That would be cool if this was a laptop, but it's not. I fail to understand the need to make everything so small these days that you can't do simple things like type an email. Forget about using shortcut keys because you will always get them wrong.
2: Speaking of shortcuts, this keyboard has some "hidden" shortcut menu that I have yet to decipher. There is some combination of keys that triggers this Windows shortcut menu, rendering most of the keys on the keyboard as ways to open Ease of Access menus, etc. No where is this marked on the keyboard, emails to Microsoft have resulted in ZERO response and the only way to exit this and actually have normal keyboard function is to slam all the keys as hard as possible repeatedly until normal functioning occurs. Needless to say this has broke off the supports from the underside that lift the keyboard.
Needless to say, I am looking for something to replace this poorly designed excuse for a keyboard. As usual the people at Microsoft have destroyed yet another product.

I have a Dell minitower running Vista. When I bought the computer 1.5 years ago, I threw out the cheap Dell keyboard that came with it and bought a Logitech Illuminated Keyboard to replace it. The Logitech product connected via USB port and Vista would stop recognizing the keyboard after the machine sat idle for a half-hour or so. No software updates seemed to fix this annoyance. I finally gave in to the Evil Empire bought this Microsoft-brand product, reasoning that a USB keyboard offered by Microsoft might work better than a USB keyboard offered by Logitech. I was right. Not only does it work without issue, but it also has a nice selection of programmable keys that allow me to simplify media playback, internet surfing and e-mail.

I am not into gaming or utilizing different multimedia shortcuts from keyboard, so I cannot review how well the software is programmed or the functionality of the different media keys. I type about 3 hours per night, and find this keyboard to be quiet, responsive, well-built, and very comfortable.
I have compared this particular item with Logitech Compact Keyboard K300, which is at about the same price range; and Logitech Illuminated Ultrathin Keyboard with Backlighting, which is more expensive. The budget price Logitech k300 is nice and very compact, but keys of this Microsoft Digital Media 3000 felt more solid and cushioned.
Keys on the ultrathin illuminating keyboard have a very bouncy feel to them, similar to that of MaCally Icekey (but quieter than the IceKey), so if you like your keys to be crisp and clicky, you should stay away from this Microsft keyboard and go for the Logitech or MaCally.
I've only had this keyboard for less than 1 month. My experience with Microsoft keyboard is that they are not as durable as Logitech. I hope this one is different.

It's a Microsoft keyboard. It just works, as expected.
It offers plenty of customizable media/shortcut keys even for power users. If you are someone who needs an affordable, well-made keyboard with media keys and a few shortcuts, this is the keyboard for you.
For typing, the keys are whisper quiet. The keyboard sits at a very comfortable level and the keys are spaced perfectly, even for those with very large hands. IntelliType software is very easy to install, and runs minimally. It stays out of your way so you can work efficiently without any annoying overlays or interruptions (besides the volume controls).
Another neat little feature is the spill-proof design, though a feature I'm not willing to test purposefully of course. ;)
